Cannes is universally associated with its International Film Festival. Every spring since 1946, the Croisette has become the epicentre of the world's glamour, attracting almost 200,000 visitors to a small, vibrant and intensely mediatised area. But few people take the time to escape, even for a few hours, beyond the coastline.
And yet, less than fifty kilometres away, you'll find a completely different backdrop: gentle hills, hilltop villages, winding roads lined with olive trees and spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean, set against the backdrop of the purple rocks of the Estérel massif. A luminous, refined hinterland, where Provence is revealed in its most authentic - and most desirable - form.
The world's perfume capital, Grasse has a rich heritage and serene flower-filled hills. Around the town, the villages of Plascassier, Châteauneuf-de-Grasse, Le Rouret, Opio and Roquefort-les-Pins create an elegant Provence, where centuries-old bastides, Belle Époque villas and contemporary properties coexist harmoniously.
The historic cradle of perfumery since the XVIᵉ century, Grasse has seen its expertise enshrined by UNESCO with the inclusion of three emblematic practices in the intangible cultural heritage of humanity: the cultivation of perfume plants, the processing of raw materials and the art of composing perfume. In a generous natural setting, jasmine, centifolia rose, tuberose and iris continue to shape the identity of the region.
It's impossible to stay in Grasse without visiting one of its iconic perfume houses. Fragonard, Galimard and Parfum d'Antan perpetuate this heritage by offering immersive tours and olfactory creation workshops, where everyone is invited to compose their own perfume. A refined, intimate, almost initiatory sensory experience.
Less than fifteen kilometres from Grasse, Gourdon rises like an eagle's nest above the Loup valley. Perched at an altitude of over 700 metres, this medieval village offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in the region, taking in the coastline from Nice to Théoule in a single glance.
Climbing the Chemin du Paradis, an old mule track, is an experience in itself. The effort is rewarded by the sight of a stone village huddled around its
A feudal castle, brought to life by local craftsmen and producers of honeys, soaps, spices, olive oils and Provençal sweets.
On the way down, the road winds through the gorges du Loup, set between impressive cliffs. In summer, the waterfalls - the Saut du Loup and Courmes waterfalls, almost 40 metres high - provide refreshing stops. A diversion to Tourrettes-sur-Loup is essential for a gourmet break at the Florian confectionery, a veritable institution where crystallised petals, candied citrus fruits and fine chocolates bring back childhood memories in a refined setting.
Saint-Paul de Vence, a legendary village in the hinterland, dominates the hills of the Provencal Middle Country. From the 1920s onwards, long before the influx of tourists, artists and writers fell under the spell of this timeless place.
The legendary Colombe d'Or quickly became the beating heart of this creative effervescence. Under the impetus of its owner Paul Roux, the walls were covered with works of art offered in exchange for meals or stays. Jacques Prévert, Picasso, Chagall, Braque, Léger and Calder, as well as Yves Montand, Simone Signoret and Lino Ventura, all played their part in forging the myth.
Even today, the Grande Rue lined with houses from the XVIᵉ and XVIIᵉ centuries is home to galleries, workshops and ancient fountains. The ramparts, sentry walk and military remains are a reminder of the village's history, while the must-see Maeght Foundation extends this artistic immersion in an exceptional architectural and landscaped setting.
Just a few minutes from Cannes, Mougins attracts an international clientele in search of tranquillity, luxury and discretion. This hilltop village combines historic charm, renowned gastronomy, art galleries and a gentle way of life.
Around the old village, vast residential areas are home to bastides full of character, contemporary villas nestling in secure private estates and exceptional properties bordering renowned golf courses, such as the Royal Mougins. Its proximity to the international schools of Valbonne and Sophia Antipolis makes it even more attractive to cosmopolitan families.
Further west, the canton of Fayence extends this enchanted interlude. Tourrettes, Seillans, Callian, Montauroux and Fayence are reminiscent of a southern Tuscany, with their shady squares, pastel shutters and panoramic views over the hills of the Var.
The properties here are remarkable: elegantly renovated farmhouses, stone bastides and sleek contemporary villas, often with infinity pools and landscaped gardens. The private estate of Terre Blanche is the epitome of discreet luxury, with an internationally renowned golf course, spa and extra security.
Just 10 to 45 minutes from the beaches of Théoule, Mandelieu, Cannes and Saint-Raphaël, the Cannes hinterland offers a rare art of living. Provencal authenticity, accessibility, tranquillity and first-class infrastructure (A8 motorway, Nice international airport, TGV train station) all come together naturally.
A peaceful main residence, elegant holiday home or heritage investment, this confidential yet connected region embodies subtle luxury, far from the hustle and bustle but still within easy reach of the Riviera.
Escaping to the Cannes hinterland means choosing a different idea of luxury: that of time regained, unspoilt landscapes and villages steeped in soul. Between the scents of Grasse, breathtaking panoramas, artistic heritage and confidential addresses, this day trip reveals a subtle Provence that is both authentic and refined. Just a few minutes from the Croisette, this rare balance between bustle and serenity offers a precious experience, reserved for those who take the time to look beyond the coastline.
