Nature breaks around Paris

Just a few metro stops away or less than an hour by train, the Paris region offers plenty of green breaks, ideal for escaping the urban pace without leaving the Île-de-France. Historic gardens, unspoilt forests, picturesque villages and cultural estates make up a range of accessible getaways, perfect for a day or a weekend.

The Saint-Cloud national estate

Sometimes a change of scenery begins at the end of an underground line. Located at the end of line 9, the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud is a vast park with perspectives inspired by the art of French gardens. A former royal residence that no longer exists, the site still boasts long avenues, fountains and wide open lawns.

From the heights of the park, the view over Paris is remarkable. The meadows, wooded areas and educational farm offer a diversity of landscapes that give the impression of being in the heart of nature, on the outskirts of the capital.

Espace Rambouillet

In the heart of the Rambouillet forest, the Espace Rambouillet offers a gentle immersion in wildlife. Signposted trails allow you to discover the flora and fauna without getting lost, keeping an eye out for the discreet movements of deer, roe deer or wild boar.

The site is also home to the Forest of Eagles, where more than 120 birds of prey of 30 species perform free-flight demonstrations. A popular experience for families, combining observation, education and wide open spaces.

Access: approximately 34 minutes from Montparnasse station - shuttle service by prior arrangement from Rambouillet station.

The Chamarande estate

Both a landscape park and a cultural venue, the Domaine de Chamarande offers a rich programme of contemporary art exhibitions, workshops for young visitors and open-air shows in fine weather.

The park alternates between woods, meadows and structured gardens, punctuated by a small island that is a haven for many species of birds. The vast green spaces invite you to take a stroll or enjoy a picnic in a peaceful atmosphere.

Access: 1 hour from Paris - RER C, Chamarande station, 200 m from the estate.

Chantilly, heritage and wide open spaces

Just 45 minutes from Paris, the Chantilly estate is one of France's heritage gems. Former home of the Duc d'Aumale, Henri d'Orléans, the château houses the collections of the Musée Condé, which are remarkable for their richness and intact conservation.

The estate stretches between parkland, forest and historic buildings, including the Grandes Écuries. These are home to the Horse Museum, dedicated to the relationship between man and horse throughout civilisation, and offer equestrian shows based on the art of dressage all year round.

The medieval town of Provins

Provins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, invites you to take a trip back in time. Ramparts, towers and cobbled streets make up a setting that's perfect for strolling and exploring.

Throughout the year, the town offers shows, events and historical re-enactments that bring the medieval spirit back to life. It's the perfect escape for a timeless day out.

Auvers-sur-Oise, in the footsteps of the Impressionists

Bordered by forest and wheat fields, Auvers-sur-Oise has long inspired painters and artists, particularly the Impressionists. The village's charm lies in its stone houses, its paths along the Oise and its unspoilt atmosphere.

After a visit to the artists' houses, the Château d'Auvers-sur-Oise and its gardens offer a tour dedicated to the history of art and landscape, in a soothing setting.

The Chevreuse Valley

Just forty minutes from Paris by train, the Chevreuse Valley Regional Nature Park offers a wide choice of walks and cycle rides. Forests, rivers, abbeys and castles punctuate the varied, unspoilt landscape.

From Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse station, the Baladobus provides easy access to the park's iconic sites, including the Château de la Madeleine and the Vaux de Cernay. The waterfalls, fed by the Cernay broths, are a popular setting for an outdoor break.

Giverny, the house and gardens of Claude Monet

A little further afield, Giverny offers a unique encounter between art and nature. Claude Monet lived here for over forty years, and conceived his house and gardens as veritable living works of art.

The flower garden, the water garden and the famous water lilies provide an insight into the painter's world and his sources of inspiration. A visit to the house and gardens retains an unspoilt atmosphere, conducive to contemplation and relaxation.

Escape around Paris

These escapades offer a different view of the Paris region: greener, quieter, but still rich in heritage and discoveries. So many accessible destinations to round off a stay in Paris with a day in the fresh air, combining culture, nature and the art of living.
